On April 23rd 2024, Perempuan Laut ID was invited to be a conversation starter at the Indonesia-United States Dialogue on Maritime Security in the Sulu-Sulawesi Sea. This event is attended by U.S. Agency for International Development, Kementerian Kelautan dan Perikanan, Kementerian Koordinator Bidang Kemaritiman dan Investasi, Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional, University of Tennessee, Universitas Kristen Indonesia, and Center for Advanced Defense Studies.
The Sulu-Sulawesi Seas covers ~900,000 square kilometres in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. It hosts a global hotspot for marine biodiversity that provides livelihood, food, shelter, recreation, and climate regulation for ~40 million people living along its coasts and the rest of the planet. It is also a highly strategic sea route for global supply chains to and from East Asia and the Middle East.
Yet, the seas are also threatened by cross-border criminal acts, from armed ship robbery, terrorism, to illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Overfishing and pollution in the coastal development area pose serious challenges to maritime security in the Sulu-Sulawesi Sea.

Thus, this multi stakeholder roundtable seeks maritime security solutions across different actors that advances holistic and integrated policy in the Sulu-Sulawesi Sea, including improving Indonesia-US partnership.
Together, we discussed ways to enhance its marine resources governance for a sustainable future.
Thank you to event co-organizer American Studies Center Universitas Indonesia, the Indonesian Institute of Advanced International Studies, the Wilson Center, the University of Strathclyde, and the Hollings Center for having us!
